COMM 40323 Food, Culture, and Communication

Prerequisites: COMM majors/minors only, or permission of department; COMM 10123 or COMM 10163 with a C- or better; combined GPA of 2.5 in COMM 20113 and 20223; COMM 30163 with a C- or better. To increase understanding of the multiple ways that food communication occurs. Students will critically analyze how food functions symbolically as a communicative practice by which we create, manage, and share meanings with others. Emphasis on how the various relationships between communication and food negotiate our identities, cultures, and environments. Patterns of communicative food practices--and how those are influenced by social, economic, historical, and cultural contexts--are also examined.
