HIST 30653 The Life and Times of Benjamin Disraeli

Explores Britain's nineteenth century through the career of Benjamin Disraeli, by turns novelist, dandy, romantic poet, Tory democrat, statesman, and twice prime minister. The story of how this middle-class, Jewish outsider became the ultimate political insider reveals the role of class, religion, and race in British society. Particular attention will be given Disraeli's role in the development of the British empire, the promotion of a modern monarchy, and democratization of the political system. (EU)
