ENGL 40403 Chaucer
Prerequisites: ENGL 10803, ENGL 20803, and at least one 10000- or 20000-level ENGL/WRIT/CRWT course. An intensive study of Chaucer's major poetry, especially The Canterbury Tales and Troilus and Criseyde, in Middle English. Emphasis is on Chaucer as inheritor and innovator of medieval ideas about God, social order, gender, authorship, and the morality of reading and the function of poetry. Some prior experience with early literature is expected. Student
