2023-24 Graduate Catalog

ENGL 70603 Digital Approaches to Textual Problems

In this class, students will explore the methods and theories that underlie the move toward 'big data' in the humanities. Students will examine how we can better understand research questions in rhetoric, culture, and conceptual issues (such as gender and sexuality) through the use of computational tools. Through a serious of close-reading, writing, and programming assignments, students will not only learn how to utilize digital methods, but also how to think critically about these methods. Students will gain a working familiarity with the tools and scholarly conventions prominent in the digital humanities.
