Candidates for departmental honors should take STCO 30003 their junior year and STCO 40003 their senior year.

Department of Strategic Communication Internships

Students are strongly encouraged to arrange internships with public relations or ad agencies or departments in corporations dedicated to external and internal communications. An intern director assists students in locating and qualifying for internships. Academic credit is available for successfully completed internships with prior approval.

Additional information on internship policies and procedures is at www.stco.tcu.edu.

Roxo, Student-run Strategic Communication Agency

In Roxo, students gain hands-on work experience and apply their classroom learning to real-life, urgent communication challenges. Inside an agency space in Moudy South, students work as account planners, account executives, writers, digital/social media strategists and public relations specialists.

Roxo’s clients have included start-ups, US-based and international nonprofits, companies, small businesses and public-sector agencies. A weekly Agency Operations class rounds out the experience by helping students understand the industry, hear from working professionals, and learn business practices such as writing estimates, running client meetings, and identifying new opportunities.

Roxo is a three-credit, upper-level elective in the strategic communication major. Students must apply for admission. To be eligible, a student must be a junior or senior who has completed the gateway courses plus four other courses in the major.

Five-year Combined Bachelor’s/Master’s Program

The five-year combined bachelor’s/master’s program enables outstanding strategic communication students to combine a bachelor’s degree in strategic communication with the Master’s of Strategic Communication in five years. Students may apply for admission to the strategic communication program during the semester they complete 75 hours of undergraduate coursework.

To be considered for admission, students must submit a graduate application. If admitted, students complete up to 12 semester hours in the Strategic Communication graduate program during their fourth year of undergraduate study. Those 12 hours of graduate courses may fulfill elective requirements for the strategic communication major. At the end of the fourth year, assuming that all other graduation requirements are met, the student earns his/her baccalaureate degree.

During the summer before his/her fifth year, the student will complete 6 hours of the STCO graduate courses. During his/her fifth year, the student then completes the remaining 18 semester hours toward the STCO master’s degree. Students intending to pursue the five-year combined bachelor’s/master’s program should make their plans known as early as possible to faculty members in the Department of Strategic Communication to ensure proper advising.
