Writing, BA

Each student forms a program of study in consultation with a faculty adviser in English.

General Requirements

To earn the BA with a major in writing, students must complete 33 hours in Writing or English (exclusive of ENGL 10803, ENGL 10833, ENGL 20803 and ENGL 20833). Of these, at least 24 hours must be in upper-division WRIT or ENGL courses (30000 level and above). No more than 9 hours of lower-division credit may be applied to the major.

All writing majors are required to take WRIT 38063 (Writing Major Seminar) after they have attained junior standing and completed 9 hours in WRIT or ENGL courses (exclusive of ENGL 10803, ENGL 10833, ENGL 20803 and ENGL 20833).

ENGL 30970 and ENGL 50970, courses in special topics that change from semester to semester, usually satisfy one or more of the requirements for majors. Consult the department or check the department website, www.eng.tcu.edu.

Specific Requirements

To earn a major in writing, students must complete at least 3 of the 33 hours in Digital Intensive courses (see subcategory for courses or consult the department). Most of these courses can be used to satisfy one of the distribution requirements listed below in categories 1, 2, 3, 6 or 8.

  1. 3 hours from the Creative Writing subcategory
  2. 3 hours from the Rhetoric and Culture subcategory
  3. 3 hours from the Design and Editing subcategory
  4. 3 hours from the Internship subcategory (WRIT 30391 is a single credit, e.g., students must take WRIT 30391 three times to satisfy this requirement)
  5. 3 hours of Writing Major Seminar (WRIT 38063)
  6. 6 elective hours of any courses in sections 1 through 3 above (student must take two additional electives in 1 or 2 or 3)
  7. 6 upper-division hours of any ENGL literary and language courses not listed above
  8. 6 elective hours of any ENGL or WRIT courses
