The remaining 9 hours are selected from one of two tracks.

Track 1: Digital Culture

Coursework from English, writing, fine arts and communication.

Digital culture outcomes

  1. Students will demonstrate knowledge of the social and historical context of digital culture.
  2. Students will demonstrate an ability to compose digital arguments.
  3. Students will encounter significant works of scholarship and methods for doing research in digital studies.

Track 2: Data Analytics

Coursework from criminal justice, economics, geography, political science and math.

Data analytics outcomes

  1. Coding: Students will develop intermediate proficiency or greater with at least one coding language used for spatial/statistical analysis (STATA, R, Python).
  2. Data management and manipulation: Students will learn how to find data, create datasets, manipulate and clean data, and create new variables from pre-existing data sources.
  3. Analysis and statistics: Students will choose and apply proper statistical methods for analysis and interpret the results.
  4. Regression and spatial analysis: Students will use GIS and statistical software to explore patterns, relationships and processes.
  5. Presentation of data: Students will present the results of their analysis in a variety of formats including, plots and graphs, digital mapping and cartography, and online.
Courses may not count for both major and minor requirements. For example, if the student seeks a Middle East minor and a history major, HIST 10803 (Introduction to Islamic Civilizations) could count toward the requirements for the minor OR the requirements for the major, but not both.
