Journalism, MS

This degree is designed for journalists working in digital, television or print news media. Coursework and research broaden the degree candidates' perspective by introducing them to the history, theories and concepts that underlie mass communication systems, as well as the issues facing working journalists. Students take courses that study and analyze different fields of mass communication to enable critical and creative thinking about today’s media.

Admission Requirements

Applicants to the department must meet general University requirements as specified in the graduate catalog, and have completed 15 semester hours (five courses) in undergraduate journalism, advertising or public relations, or have substantial professional experience in a communication discipline as determined by the Department of Journalism graduate faculty. The application must also include:

  • Application form;
  • Two official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended;
  • Statement of no more than 250 words describing academic and/or professional objectives;
  • Three letters of recommendation; and
  • GRE general test scores.

An applicant who does not meet the admission requirements must take up to 15 semester hours of undergraduate journalism, advertising, or public relations courses that will not count toward the graduate degree. The Department of Journalism graduate faculty will determine the number of semester hours needed.

Degree Requirements for the Department of Journalism M.S. Degrees

The Master of Science in Journalism requires 36 hours.

Students may select up to 21 hours of journalism or strategic communication courses that best fit their career needs. Up to 9 approved graduate hours may be taken from TCU academic units outside the Department of Journalism.

Two tracks are available, one requiring a project and the other a thesis.
